It is an insult to God to believe in God. For on the one hand it is to suppose that he has perpetrated acts of incalculable cruelty. On the other hand, it is to suppose that he has perversely given his human creatures an instrument -- their intellect -- which must inevitably lead them, if they are dispassionate and honest, to deny his existence. It is tempting to conclude that if he exists, it is the atheists and agnostics that he loves best, among those with any pretensions to education. For they are the ones who have taken him most seriously.

I don't think that the flesh is necessarily treacherous, evil, bad. It is cantankerous, and it is independent. The idea of independence is the key. It really is like colonialism. The colonies suddenly decide that they can and should exist with their own personality and should detach from the control of the mother country. At first the colony is perceived as being treacherous. It's a betrayal. Ultimately, it can be seen as the separation of a partner that could be very valuable as an equal rather than as something you dominate

Controversy and Truth (famous quote)
by Big Jim inwhen a subject is highly controversial... one cannot hope to tell the truth.
one can only show how one came to hold whatever opinion one does hold.
one can only give one's audience the chance of drawing their own conclusions as they observe the limitations, the prejudices, the idiosyncrasies of the speaker.. virginia wolf.

Belief is a wise wager. Granted that faith cannot be proved, what harm will come to you if you gamble on its truth and it proves false? If you gain, you gain all; if you lose, you lose nothing. Wager, then, without hesitation, that He exists.

You Can See Me Dance The Polka Tra La La La.
by Englishman inwhen spencer traceys genial dr. jekyll started to whistle you can see me dance the polka we all knew what was about to happen.
sure enough, within a minute or so, the hairs were growing on the back of his hands as the metamorphosis into the odious mr. hyde took effect.. so, im wondering, what exactly are the warning signs that signify that a normally pleasant human being is about to turn into that most wearisome of creatures, youve guessed it, the self-righteous condemning and critical jw?.
i ask because of the impending visit of my auntie lou.

She smokes she drinks and she is living with a man.Talk about your programed mind.

About Truth and Religion (famous quote)
by Big Jim inthose who believe in their truth -- the only ones whose imprint is retained by the memory of men -- leave the earth behind them strewn with corpses.
religions number in their ledgers more murders than the bloodiest tyrannies account for, and those whom humanity has called divine far surpass the most conscientious murderers in their thirst for slaughter.. e.m.cioran (1911-,rumanian-born french philospher)
